Pace your web page changes

Don't make too many changes too fast when updating pages on your web site. This can confuse search bots at times. Have a plan for your web site and implement the plan at a slow, but steady pace.

Make your text links stand out!

By default, when you make a text link to another location, the text is blue underlined. You can make your text a different color to blend in with the rest of your content and you can even remove the underline. The link will still be there, the search engine will see it, and your page will look that much nicer!

You need a footer!

If you don't have a footer at the bottom of your web page, you should create one right away! One thing you can do with a footer is include your company name, city, etc. Also, you can work in your page-specific keywords to make the page just that much stronger. On some of my web sites, I include a phrase such as "Relevant keywords" and then list my keywords. This works out pretty well - give it a try!

How's your robots.txt file?

If you have no clue what I am talking about, you definitely need a robots.txt file. This file is a way of telling search robots or spiders where to look and where not to look when indexing your web site. Some spiders must see this file for them to continue, so you want to be sure you have one in the root directory of your website. If you want to know more, just let me know!

Are you using your Alt text?

"Alt text" stands for alternate text and is displayed whenever graphic images can not be displayed. This is an excellent time to insert keywords and other relevant information, not only to describe the image, but to strengthen your page-specific keyword ranking as well. Give it a try!

What is your text size?

Did you ever wonder what size the text should be on your web pages. Sometimes, it depends on what kind of web site you have. News oriented sites lean more toward 8 to 10 pt sizes while other sites go with a 12 pt size. Larger font sizes equate to speaking more loudly, so you want to make sure you are not yelling at your visitors. Search engines like bold text and header text, so be sure to use your keywords such that they can be bolded. Let me know if you have questions.

Placement of important keywords

Be sure you put your most important keywords close to the top of the page. Search engines like to see those words at the top and consider the page more relevant because of it. Make this change gradually, over time.

Titles are important!

Be sure your web page titles include your most important keywords for that page. Search engines definitely check page titles and you will want to make each page title unique to the page, based on keywords for that page.
