How to use Typos to your Website Advantage
I know you think I am crazy for saying this, but it is possible to
use website typos (especially keyword-related typos) to increase the
number of visits to your website. While search engines are pretty smart
at figuring typos out, you can also intentionally add typos to your
website. Want to know how? Read on!
You would be surprised to know how often someone enters a misspelled
word as part of their web search. I do it multiple times a day because I
am such a speed typist. Many businesses (and less than honorable ones)
purchase domain names that are typos of the real domain name, just to
get you to their site. For example, enter amzon.com into your web
browser and see how it gets forwarded to amazon.com. Amazon took care of
that typo for you.
Here is one of the less-than-desirable websites taking advantage of
typos. In your browser, enter ebya.com and you will see a links-only
page that goes to a search portal listing all kinds of eBay-type places,
but not taking you to eBay at all. By the way, ebya.com is registered by
an entity located in Gdynsk, Poland.
There are even websites that will generate domain name and keyword typos
for you! Just do a web search on “typo generator website” or “keyword
typo generator” to learn more.
Although it does happen at times, it is considered tacky to have
typographical errors in the title or content areas of our website. We
want to look as professional as possible. So, just how does one get
typos on a webpage without it looking tacky?
There are two ways to do it. First is to add a section at the bottom of
your web page, way down below the main page area, which lists something
called “Relevant Research Terms” or something similar. In this section,
you can put not only additional page-relevant keywords, but your most
important typos as well. Most website visitors will never read this
section and even if they do, they can accept that a typo could be a
legitimate research term.
The second way is to add keyword typos to your META Keyword tag. Although it is widely believed that most search engines do not make
heavy use of this section any more, they may use it for general indexing
(not ranking) purposes. And, since it is not text that a web visitor
will ever see, why not use it as well?
Actually, there is a third way to get a keyword typo on your website,
but it is a bit trickier to implement. You can add it to your page Title
tag, but you should space it out so far that it does not appear in the
web browser title area. You should only use your most important typo and
only use it once. Keep in mind that most browsers will display between
60 and 90 characters, so to be safe, you should get out beyond 120
characters before adding your typo word. Search engines do read this and
it has been repeatedly tested and verified over the years.
Well, there you have it. You can now use typos to your advantage on your
website. As with most anything else web design related, use this
technique in moderation and be sure to check your website by doing typo
searches to see just how well it works. Happy typo-ing!
