Snag Some Low-hanging Keyword Fruit
Overview
Many times, we agonize over not being found on the Internet. In
some of these situations, however, improving our website ranking will
require more work than we realize or our expectations are unrealistic.
One strategy for increasing the number of visitors to your website is to
go after "low-hanging keyword fruit!" In this article, we will
explore just what this fruit is and how your can grow it.
Body
Your website may be one whose keywords are very highly competitive.
Let’s say you sell a service, such as interior decorating. This
just happens to be a fairly competitive keyword phrase or “keyphrase,”
so much so that Google shows over 3 million results. The odds of
you being a first page result for this search are pretty low.
Before we go any further, you are probably wondering what in the world
is “low-hanging keyword fruit.” Let me explain – it’s a take-off
on the phrase “low-hanging fruit,” as in, fruit that is easy to reach or
obtain. In keyword-eze, low-hanging fruit are those keyphrases
that you can easily do well with. There may not be a lot of fruit,
but when there is, you will be the one to snag it.
Back to our interior decorating example, since you probably won’t be a
first page result (or even a10 page result) for this search, you need to
be more specific. This, by the way, is how many people search.
Let’s try adding the word, Ohio, to our keyphrase and see what happens.
Well, what do you know – our results dropped to a tiny 598,000.
That is much easier to compete for, but not a guarantee by any means.
If we add Columbus, we have this keyphrase, “interior decorating
Columbus Ohio” and our results drop to 349,000. However, maybe our
customer base lives in our part of Columbus, Ohio where we really want
to do the most business. Let’s go with a small community in
northeast Columbus, called Gahanna and see what we get. Yes!
We now have a tiny 3,350 results and we can win that one.
The neat part about this approach is that most others have not thought
to apply this technique. By listing all of the communities you
serve in a geographic area, you can begin to snag some of this
low-hanging fruit.
You can also apply this method to other products and services, such as
parts for slot cars or a specific software application for small
businesses. With this approach, you can add a “Relevant Research
Terms:” section at the bottom of a web page. These terms should be
things that are talked about elsewhere on the page, but if they are
unique enough, just placing them in this “Relevant Research Terms”
section will qualify as low-hanging fruit.
Give it a try and see what kind of low-hanging keyword fruit you can
produce. Happy picking!
